Today’s attorneys are often called upon to have more sophisticated skills and experience beyond being mere practitioners of law. “Good Lawyers” are entrepreneurial, innovative, flexible and nimble. In addition, they must be adept at business strategy and have a powerful business network that spans across industries. Above all, good lawyers have the ability to come with creative solutions for their clients who face complex business and legal problems.
Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen might indeed possess sophisticated skills and experience. He is certainly entrepreneurial and possesses a powerful business network. Unfortunately, as an attorney Michael Cohen is missing a brick—he lacks any shred of integrity. He is utterly devoid of ethics, and ethics are absolutely essential not just in being a good lawyer, but in being a lawyer, period.
Those of us who are bound by ethics—even when we make mistakes—want the chance for a big do-over, to make wrong right, and to seek a road that moves toward redress and redemption. We take pride in the attorneys we have featured in our news, who have all of the attributes of being good lawyers, and especially ethics and integrity.
