On March 15th, people will mail Donald Trump a postcard to publicly express opposition to him. Great numbers of people from all over the world will state the reasons for his unpopularity, incompetence, and failure. 


Enlarging Our Discourse

The column I wrote for the June 2018 issue of ASA News & Notes could easily be the column I write this month: a year ago, it covered school shootings, mass shootings, the Trump administration’s separation of children from their refuge parents, and insult with bluster as a form of diplomacy. A year later, we see not much has changed, and each of these topics makes news regularly.


A Free and Independent Press

This past month – despite ongoing attacks from President Trump that range from characterizations like “the lying New York Times” to “fake news” (CNN) to “garbage” (BuzzFeed) – the American press continues to cover the White House closely. In fact, the press is increasing the breadth of its scrutiny with op-ed pieces such as those in the Washington Post and New York Times, as well as extended opinion pieces by on-air journalists like Don Lemon, Anderson Cooper, Brian Williams, and Rachel Maddow.
